    AutoStrada®

    Architecture for the Workplace

Through decades of experience and accumulated knowledge, we understand that one planning model rarely provides a solution for the whole office. AutoStrada synthesizes 40 years of Knoll’s best ideas to deliver a comprehensive, architectural system that accommodates the full spectrum of your company’s workspace needs.

Designed with four planning modes — spine-based, storage-based, wall-based, and table-based — AutoStrada offers an aesthetically consistent design solution for the entire workplace. So whether you require a high-performance open plan system, architectural case goods, progressive private office furniture or a collaborative “big table” concept — or a mix of all four — AutoStrada is the answer.

    Key Benefits

ARCHITECTURALLY INSPIRED. AutoStrada is an intelligent, comprehensive system that combines furniture and interior architecture with millwork-quality detail and sophisticated material choices.

MULTIFACETED PLANNING OPTIONS. Four planning models, one aesthetic. AutoStrada is designed to be a singular office solution — working across all planning modes to create an overall sense of continuity and openness.

ARRAY OF MATERIALS. AutoStrada offers a rich material palette, combining premium wood veneers, clear anodized aluminum, classic finishes and tempered glass, all within a unified Knoll aesthetic.

    Spine-Based

As the architectural foundation of the AS-1 open office landscape, the AutoStrada Spine Wall serves as the central structure to which perpendicular screens and worksurfaces attach, dividing space and defining individual workstations. With all power and data contained in the spine, repositioning perpendiculars requires no rewiring, making changes in workstation configuration fast and easy.

    Storage-Based

AutoStrada storage-anchored planning defines workspace boundaries with the elegance of fine casegoods, and the utility and logic of a panel system. Refining the aesthetic of previous panel-based office furniture, AS-2 provides a more architectural appearance, using storage cabinets, shelved medians and worksurface bridges to surround and support individual workstations.

    Wall-Based

AS-3 offers the AutoStrada aesthetic for wall-based applications, integrating freestanding and wall-anchored storage, desks, and tables. With casework-quality detailing and exquisite finish options, AS-3 brings distinction and elegance to any private office.

The AS-3 Applied Wall System translates the modularity and engineering of open plan systems to wall-based planning for private offices and meeting rooms. The Applied Wall — a wall-mounted support structure — increases the flexibility, power and data management capabilities of the private office by providing a vertical platform on which shelving, storage components and worksurfaces can be arranged — and rearranged.

    Open Table

Featuring the Crinion Open Table™, AS-4 is ideal for the changing workplace — enabling increased team-based activity and communication while meeting the need for both shared and individual workspaces. AutoStrada worksurfaces combine to form continuous benches for virtually any number of users, eliminating barriers to teamwork in the open plan. Individual workspaces can be defined by mobile pedestals or lateral file “returns.”

    With Fence

Fence — a freestanding spine that distributes power and data cables—broadens the possibilities of AutoStrada, offering a lighter, more flexible alternative to panel-based layouts. To create settings for focused work, Fence supports screens, stanchion-mounted storage and desktops. Freestanding, Fence can allow desks to be independent and moveable, supporting the changing needs of a team.

    Enhancing the Beauty of Wood

More than ever, office design today relies on the warmth and natural beauty of wood to infuse a feeling of hospitality into the workplace. For nearly 80 years, Knoll has brought the refinement and performance of wood to work environments, helping to create inspiring places for people to do their best. Our focus on proportion and scale, the appropriate use of materials and finishes, and attention to detail is unsurpassed.

Our new finishing technology expands our wood manufacturing expertise, combining the timelessness of good design with the enduring qualities of careful workmanship.

Our core collection consists of over 30 natural and Techwood veneers. In addition, we now offer open and closed pore options, and up to three levels of gloss: high, medium, and low — giving specifiers a greater range of design options to realize their vision.

In the late 1990s, Knoll identified the role of a new system, a product that would combine the specific strengths of several Knoll systems — the technology management of Currents®, the modular flexibility of Morrison and the elegance of Reff™.

Charles Rozier worked with Robert and Douglas Reuter to engineer the most comprehensive Knoll office system ever offered. Douglas Reuter: “It was really an exercise in perpendiculars — figuring out how to re-envision the panel-based office system so as to maintain the modular logic while increasing flexibility and style.” Flexibility was achieved through the introduction of multiple planning modes and innovative engineering. Knoll design director Carl Magnusson took care of the aesthetic aspect, styling the collection with refined, clean detailing and classic modern materials.

The pragmatic architecture of AutoStrada, combined with the timeless quality of the finishing and details, ensures that it will never go out of style. While the technology management and modular engineering give it the flexibility to continue adapting to the changing workplace. AutoStrada is designed for the way we work today, and ready to support the ways we might work tomorrow.

CARL MAGNUSSON (top left) began his long and influential career with Knoll began in 1976, when he joined as the Director of Graphics and Showroom Design. In 1993, Magnusson was named Worldwide Director of Design, collaborating on countless projects to bring other designers’ ideas from the sketch pad to the showroom.

CHARLES ROZIER (top right) came to Knoll in the early 1980s to help direct the development of the groundbreaking Morrison System, one of the most thorough office systems ever introduced. Rozier went on to serve as Vice President of Product Development at Knoll, a position that led him to co-design the Currents and AutoStrada Systems.

ROBERT REUTER (bottom left) also came to Knoll to help Andrew Morrison develop the Morrison office system. Reuter served as Knoll Senior Development Manager until 1987, and has continued to design numerous office products for the company, including the highly innovative Currents system, which he co-designed with Charles Rozier.

JONATHAN CRINON (bottom right) first collaborated with Knoll as a consultant during the development of the Reff System. In 1999 he designed the Crinion Open Table, a concept which revolutionized open plan office design and helped keep Knoll at the leading edge of the industry. The Crinion Open table is now the AS-4 component of the AutoStrada System.
