Dezeen has featured the recent introductions of the Platner Collection and the Bertoia Diamond Chair in 18k gold-plated finishes on its blog. The piece highlights three major mid-century furniture pieces that have recently released gold finishes. Knoll announced the Platner Gold Collection in August, in anticipation of the 50th Anniversary of Warren Platner's collection. Also announced in August, the Bertoia Diamond Chair in Gold joins a year-long series of honors surrounding the Harry Bertoia Centennial.
The Dezeen piece discusses contemporary advances in metal-plating for furniture. Platner originally conceived of the Platner Collection in a gold finish (he is quoted likening the collection's central form to a sheaf of golden wheat), but the methods of the time made the gold-plating process cost-prohibitive for retail.
The Bertoia Diamond Chair, which uses the same 18-karat gold finish as the Platner Collection, was released in a celebratory nod to the metalworker and sculptor's well-known affinity for beryllium, a golden-hued alloy.
