At the London Design Festival on September 22, Knoll hosted a special conversation between Celia Bertoia, the daughter of Harry Bertoia, and Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum. Hosted by Knoll Design Director Benjamin Pardo, the event was part of "Celebrate Harry Bertoia," an installation designed by architectural office OMA, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the virtuosic artist, sculptor and Knoll designer Harry Bertoia. The week is the latest in a year of celebrations surrounding the Bertoia centennial.
"Celebrate Harry Bertoia" is on view in the Clerkenwell Design Quarter until September 25. The installation presents the astonishing range of Bertoia's work. Famously prolific, Bertoia produced drawings, jewelry, furniture and sculptures—among them the experimental Sonambient works. His furniture designs for Knoll were produced in a climate of creative freedom, in which he was equally at liberty to design sculptures as chairs. The Diamond Chair, Bird Chair, Side Chair, Barstool and Bench are all testament to his facility with material, his nuanced and inspired understanding of light, space and form, and his groundbreaking devotion to production as well as the creative process.
