The October 2016 issue of Azure Magazine included the Platner Easy Chair in Gold in a roundup of metallic design. Part of a prediction of 2017 trends that include metal finishes, unusual materials, intricate patterns and brick architecture, the feature presents the Platner Easy Chair as an example of a paradigm shift in consumption: "the emphasis has moved toward a considered approach, where longevity and sustainability matter more than ever."
The Platner Collection was designed in 1966 by architect Warren Platner, who intended it to be gold-plated. However, the technology of the time made gold plating in large-scale production impossible, leading to the nickel-plated steel known today. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Platner Collection, Knoll reissued the designs in 18 karat gold, fulfilling the designer's original wish.
