Andrew Morrison brought clarity and economy to everything he designed. His furniture was made with the most appropriate materials, efficiently produced, and designed to adapt as the patterns and technology of the modern office changed. This approach resulted in several award-winning collections, and he was a major contributor to the Knoll product portfolio for three decades.
In the early 1970s, he collaborated with fellow Pratt Institute alumnus Bruce Hannah to introduce an innovative and award-winning aluminum-frame lounge collection, as well as the celebrated Morrison Hannah Chair. In 1986, Morrison designed a groundbreaking open-plan product called the Morrison System for Knoll. Designed to satisfy the evolving workplace of the 1980s, the Morrison System was built to expand and adapt as the patterns and technology of the modern office changed. It became the go-to office furniture system for 33 years and ultimately changed how today’s workspaces are organized and furnished.
Known as an iconoclast and a curmudgeon by those who knew him best, Morrison was also described as “one of the best designers ever” by his long-time design partner, Bruce Hannah. A firm believer in reductionism, Morrison was known to say, “God isn’t in the details. God would eliminate all the details.”
