Bertoia Collection
Florence and Hans Knoll gave Harry Bertoia the freedom to create whatever he wanted in whichever material he desired. They simply asked that he show them if he arrived at something interesting. He arrived at something outstanding. Introduced in 1952, the Bertoia Collection remains one of the great achievements of modern furniture design.

Italian sculptor and furniture designer Harry Bertoia and Florence Knoll (then Schust) met as students at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Upon joining the team at Knoll, Bertoia was given free rein to experiment with the medium of his choice. He chose metal. “When it came to rod or wire, whether bent or straight, I seemed to find myself at home,” he said.
