In the late 1950s, Richard Schultz received an envelope filled with rusted bolts from Florence Knoll, who was spending time at her Florida home. She tasked Schultz with the job of designing elegant outdoor furniture that could withstand corrosive sea air, season after season. Introduced in March 1966, the Leisure Collection, now called the 1966 Collection, was described by Schultz as “a breath of fresh air” for modernists. “Outdoor chairs should be enhanced by the elements,” he said. “Wind, sun, and rain should pass freely through, and they should breathe.” And breathe they do, all these years later.

Richard Schultz

Richard Schultz was an integral part of the Knoll story, beginning in 1951 when he was hired to assist Harry Bertoia on the development and production of his wire chairs. This led to a position in the Design Development Group, where he designed many elegant collections for outdoor living—the first of which was designed for Florence Knoll’s seaside Florida home.
