Competing in the 2016 Interior Design Best of Year Awards, both Spinneybeck and FilzFelt received honors for products in the Wall Application: Acoustical category. Announced at a live ceremony at Frank Gehry’s IAC Building in New York on December 1, the Beller Collection from FilzFelt was voted the best acoustical wall application product of the year, while the Architecture Research Office Block system from FilzFelt was named an honoree in the same category.
Launched in August 2016, the Beller Collection introduced cork into the Spinneybeck line of architectural products. Inspired by techniques used in traditional shoe sole molding, Norwegian designer Lars Beller Fjetland conceptualized and designed the collection for Spinneybeck. Certain tiles in the collection were inspired by the textures of factory building surfaces—rounded silos, corrugated metal siding and saw-tooth rooftops—while others make reference to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeier’s ceramic tiles, in which five standard designs can be combined and rotated to create endless, unique patterns. The heat-molded composite cork tiles provide graphic patterning across wall surfaces while simultaneously assisting with acoustic absorption.
For their 2016 collaboration with FilzFelt, the New York-based Architecture Research Office combined the natural beauty of 100% Wool Design Felt with repetition and pattern to create acoustic architectural finishes that are elegant and easy to install. The ARO Block series, in particular, was inspired by mathematical tiling and architectural patterns. The 63 colors of wool felt may be configured in endless ways, creating a customizable, one-of-a-kind acoustic solution that can be installed across large surfaces as a monolithic wall finish, or in small areas as an accent.
